Skills every advanced prepper should know to survive when SHTF

A well-rounded prepper knows how to balance their knowledge of survival skills, such as First Aid and hunting or foraging. However, if you’re just starting to learn the ins and outs of prepping, the list of skills below may seem daunting.

It will take some hard work and constant practice, but in time, you will master some, if not most of these crucial survival skills. (h/t to SHTFBlog.com.)

Bartering

In a post-SHTF world, it’s possible that money will lose its value. Know how to barter so you can trade goods with other preppers.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR)

To become CPR-certified, you can sign up for classes at an American Red Cross near your location. Other options include churches, community centers, or employers that may offer a class or two with trained professionals.

Take the time to get your Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, which will include classes on how to administer oxygen, splint broken or dislocated bones, and how to stop excessive bleeding. A BLS certification will give you crucial training that can significantly improve patient outcomes, which is a must during a survival scenario.

Car maintenance

When SHTF, it’s not enough to own a car. You also need to know how to maintain it so it can keep running even if you’re far from an auto repair establishment. Learn how to change the oil and tires and how to replace car parts. You also need to know how to start your own car if you lose your keys.

Crisis management

When SHTF, you need to master crisis management. A prepper must stay calm even if other people are panicking. Keep you cool so you can help your loved ones get through a disaster. (Related: Prepping the essentials is not enough: 10 Crucial skills to ensure your survival in a disaster.)

The power of the elements: Discover Colloidal Silver Mouthwash with quality, natural ingredients like Sangre de Drago sap, black walnut hulls, menthol crystals and more. Zero artificial sweeteners, colors or alcohol. Learn more at the Health Ranger Store and help support this news site.

First Aid

First Aid courses are often offered alongside CPR classes through the American Red Cross and the National Safety Council. If you pass these courses, you will be given a certification card that’s valid for at least for two years.

First Aid courses include different topics like:

  • How to stop bleeding
  • How to tend to people with frostbite
  • How to treat burns
  • How to treat cuts and bites
  • How to do the Heimlich maneuver

HAM (Amateur) Radio/Communications

It’s crucial to know how to operate a HAM Radio so you can keep in contact with the outside world when disaster strikes. You will need a license to send communications via a HAM Radio.

Another skill you need to learn is how to use walkie-talkies.

Mending clothes

Don’t wait until a survival scenario to learn how to sew. When the stores close, you won’t be able to buy new outfits. The next best thing is to know how to sew on a button and mend tears so you can make your clothes last.

Navigation skills

If the internet goes down, you can still get around if you know how to use a compass, read a map, and navigate at night or when it’s dark using the stars.

Outdoor survival

Outdoor survival includes various factors such as:

  • Botany – By studying botany, you can learn how to identify poisonous plants. It will also teach you how to forage for edible and medicinal flowers and plants.
  • Building a shelter – Learn how to build at least four kinds of shelter: an A-Frame, cocoon, frame-and-tarp, and a lean-to. To build these shelters, you also need to learn about knot-tying and how to use a hatchet.
  • Entomology – Studying insects will teach you how to identify poisonous and non-poisonous bugs. When SHTF, you can also use your knowledge to find edible bugs that are full of fiber and protein.
  • Fire starting – This is a basic skill, and you need to learn how to do this with your gear and with items like flint or wood.
  • Fishing and hunting – You can get your license for both fishing and hunting in almost all states online through the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
  • Water purification – Purchase a water filter and learn how to use water purification tablets.

Spending time alone

It’s hard to think about, but not everyone you know or love will survive a survival scenario. Prepare yourself mentally by doing things alone at least once or twice a week.

Survivalists make the necessary preparations today so they’re ready even before SHTF. Learn these important skills today so you can help your family survive a disaster scenario.
